Every creature on the ranch should have a purpose…the chickens provide eggs & meat, barn cats keep the mouse population in check, alpacas provide fleece…you get the picture.
Then there are the useless ranch hands, Ramsey & Blue.
Ramsey is our very large Boston Terrier who, like most terriers, is a perpetual bundle of energy…think of the energizer bunny on speed. He was a rescue dog from Cheyenne who’s owners said they gave him up because he was too expensive…they also kept him in their laundry room for 10-12 hours per day. Hard for me to understand folks like that. But, their loss was our gain.
Ramsey’s social skills are somewhat lacking, mostly I imagine due to his past owners keeping him incarcerated. It took a long time after we got him to teach him he did not need to shoot out the backdoor and carom around the yard. He still runs around like a wild man but at least he goes thru the door with a bit more dignity.
Nothing like a good roll |
Rolling is another favorite pastime…rolling in grass, on his bed, in muck (yuck) and on and on. We have a small grassy hill where he will start at the top and wiggle himself all the way to the bottom…doggie heaven!
Blue is our Huskador – Husky Lab mix – & has the personality of a Lab…dorky & sweet. He is our supervisor general who always needs to stick his big bazoo in to anything new that is happening. He helps the UPS man bring the packages up to the porch, inspects the back of his truck to make sure everything is in place, checks bags of groceries, and when the septic man came to take care of our tank, he even made sure all was well with that.
I have had several dogs, all rescue, but Blue is the first one I have had from a puppy. Here he is at about 1 week old. It is hard to believe he was ever so small…his head is as big now as his whole body was as a pup.
Enjoying a cool bath |
When I think of Blue’s personality, I always think of this old Far Side cartoon.
It's true every ranch needs ranch hands and house hands, they are definitely house hands- Loving and attentive. Not necessarily good with the livestock…………
