Here at the ranch, our house sits on a high spot and gives us wonderful 360 degree views.  To the west we can see all the way from Pike’s Peak to the south up to Long’s Peak in Rocky Mtn National Park to the north.

Pike’s Peak

In the mornings, the sunrises to the east can be spectacular and ever changing. When I lived in New York, I rarely saw the sun rise and certainly not from my apartment.  Now, it is a daily occurrence..there is nothing quite like sitting on our back deck with a cup of hot coffee and greeting the new day.

Sunflowers seem to enjoy the new day as well.  Their sunny faces track the path of the sun as it moves thru the sky and mornings find them all standing at attention and facing to the east.

I had thought that after the hailstorm we had a few weeks ago, that I would not get any sunflowers, and even though I did lose a couple of plants as well as buds, the rest came thru quite nicely.

Wild sunflowers are plentiful at this time of the year and can be found along the roadsides and in the fields.  When I lived in New York, a friend and I took a 3 week vacation and drove cross country to the Tetons and Yellowstone.  When we drove across Iowa, which I thought would be a long and dull drive,  it was awash in the golden glow of wild sunflowers and was quite magical.

When the sunflowers are done blooming, the flowers will turn to seed and feed the wild birds and my poultry.
Life is good!
