One recent afternoon, when we were in the grip of a deep freeze, I went down to the barn to check on the animals, and there in the watering trough, was one of our turkey hens. She was half submerged but buoyed up by a chunk of ice. The poor thing was soaked thru and very very cold so I bundled her up in my coat and headed back to the house to dry her off.
Apparently turkeys can swim, at least according to videos on YouTube (and we all know everything on YouTube is real!) but sadly, ours can’t and in the past we have lost several to drowning. It was a good thing that the hen landed on the ice chunk and that I found her before she froze to death.
I do love our turkeys, but honestly, they are not the smartest of God’s creatures.
We had a nice warm fire going in the wood stove so I sat the hen on my lap and started drying her off.
After stretching out her wings, toweling her off and fluffing her up, she decided she was all ready to go back to the flock.
And how was she the next morning? Fit as a fiddle, you would never suspect that she had a near brush with death!
Until next time, Happy Trails!
