Martini Porch Party Scarf Knitting Design

Dec 28, 2016 | Knitting | 1 comment

The Martini Porch Party scarf is my very first pattern design.  I wanted to start with something that was easy both for myself and the knitter, but also fun and not boring.

Visually interesting, with blocks of garter stitch and yarn overs, this scarf is a quick knit with a stitch pattern that is easily memorized. It is a great project for the newer knitter who is looking to kick up her skills to the next level and yet interesting enough to keep the seasoned knitter engaged.

The scarf can be made wider by adding additional repeats.

While trying to come up with a memorable name for this pattern, with its blocks tipping from side to side, I was reminded of summer evenings at a friend’s home and her Martini Porch Parties under the stars. Could it be that the stitch designer’s inspiration came after an evening of “tipsiness” ? – we may never know.

Confident beginner

57” long x 6” wide after blocking

Stitches used
Slip slip knit, Knit 2 together, Yarn over, Slip stitch

Gauge
Each repeat is approx 3” wide after blocking.

Yarn
Pattern used  Rolling E Ranch Baby Alpaca DK

Note: Project used approx 240 yds / 219 m of yarn

Tools
Needles: US size 5 (3.75mm) or size required for gauge. Circular or straight – your preference.

Our Alpaca Baby DK yarn is spun from fiber from three of our white ‘pacas, MacTavish aka Mac, Ourania, and Liberty.  Mac  You can find it in my  Etsy Shop,  where you will see it in white as well as hand dyed colors as well as on Ravelry.  It is wonderfully soft and a true joy to work with.

Blocking
I don’t know about you, but I HATE to block.  I usually do it on the floor on a towel and depending on the size of the piece, it can take up a lot of space.  Plus the fact that I end up feeling like a twisted pretzel from being on the floor for so long. The joys of getting older…getting down is no problem, it’s the getting up that’s tough. !!

Recently I started looking at blocking boards, which as far as I could tell are basically gym flooring.  I ended up buying a set of 4 that were a total of 16 square feet from Home Depot for less than half of what the on line knitting stores sell them for, and they work great!

Smaller pieces I can block on a large table.  Large ones still need to go on the floor, but at least I don’t end up with damp towels on the carpet, plus they are a lot easier to pin in to.  The only thing the boards don’t have are measurement lines.  No problem though, I laid out painters tape to the measurements I want to block to.

So there you have it, my first pattern with more to come.  Would love to hear what you think.

Until next time
Happy Trails,
Diana
