For sixteen days every January, the National Western Stock Show rolls in to Denver.  It is a true slice of western America with fresh faced cowboys, rodeo queens, & bucking broncs.

2017 was the 111th year of the event…pretty amazing when you stop to think about it.

There is constantly something going on, from animal shows, to all different kinds of agricultural exhibits.

And you can pretty much buy anything from a hay feeder…

to a rubber band gun…

to a genuine cowboy hat

The Poultry Show has every imaginable type of domesticated bird…chickens, ducks, game birds, peacocks and. of course, Emus!

These adorable gals are Fair Royalty.  You have queens, princesses and ladies in waiting.  They travel around the state, riding in parades and rodeos and are ambassadors for the western way of life.

It seems like a wonderful experience for these girls…they meet hundreds of people during their reign and learn to carry themselves with poise and grace.

Bald Eagle

A Raptor rescue group is at the show every year, bringing their various rescued birds.  It is a great experience for young’uns as well as adults who may never have an opportunity to see these birds in the wild, much less up close.

Peregrine Falcon

Harris Hawk
Barn Owl

I love watching the kiddos…they get such pleasure out of the little things.

The livestock barns were full of all different kinds of cattle.

The amount of work and attention to detail that goes in to getting the animals ready for the show ring is amazing.

I wish this pic was not blurry, but I have included it so you can see how young some of the participants are at Stock Show.

There were lots and lots of sheep to see.

And like the cattle, there was non stop clipping, cleaning and primping.

I don’t know what this guy was up to, but it seemed he had an itchy foot and the best way to scratch it was to use the other sheep’s back as a foot rest.

Just after I took this pic, the once clean, but now dirty sheep had enough and got up. The one with the itchy foot then went on to his other stall mate and started the foot thing all over again….go figure ????

This crazy looking guy is a  Jacob Sheep

And I don’t know what breed this guy was, but he was the biggest sheep I had ever seen, almost the size of a small pony.

Owners put these coats on their animals to keep them clean until it is time to show.

And last, but certainly not least, is this adorable pic from the 1914 show of a baby contest for 3 year olds.

Hope you have enjoyed this look in to our western way of life.

Until next time…Happy Trails,
