I’d wager that most of you don’t know that we have petrified wood here in Colorado. As a matter of fact, we have lots of it.

I was driving home the other day, and off on the side of the road was a stopped car and an older
gentleman walking along.  I pulled over to see if he needed help, which is something we all tend to do out here, and he told me he was looking for petrified wood. How cool is that?  He even had his rock hammer in hand!

We have been having A LOT of rain the last month or so, huge gully washers that are reshaping the roads and ditches, and thankfully filling our ponds and watering our fields.

The man’s wife was sitting in the drivers seat and just shook her head and rolled her eyes.  Apparently a very patient woman who has been thru this before.

Since I also expressed my interest in petrified wood, I have found some small pieces on the ranch over the years, he told me about the amazing find he made just east of us.

So I headed off in the designated direction and Holy Moly, what a find it was!!

There in the ditch at the side of the road was this large petrified tree trunk!

I can only assume that it was exposed during a storm when the side of the road washed out and a large gulley was formed.

It is not as calcified as many other pieces of petrified wood I have seen, but it sure was interesting.

It looks like it might have been in a fire at one time, based on the large black areas.

I sure would have liked to have hauled it home to put in our front yard, but it was just too hard to make happen so unless someone else comes along and takes it away, it will just stay where it is and once again be lost to the ages.

Until next time,  Happy Trails!
