For the Birds

Jun 23, 2018 | Ranch Critters

Every year, Phoebes migrate to our ranch looking for bugs, which we have an unlimited supply of, and nesting spots in the nooks and crannies of our barn.

They especially love moths and small butterflies and can be seen hovering, diving, flitting and zipping this way and that in search of their next meal.

These three little guys finally left their nest, or were kicked out by mom 🙂 and seem to be somewhat unsure as to where to go.

But this little guy was a bit more adventurous and went out on his own on to one of the cattle panels.

Mom swooped in with a nice, fat, tasty bug.

And back off she went for the next course.

The agility of Phoebes is quite amazing.  I have seen them chasing moths across a field like a fighter pilot engaged in a life or death dog fight.

And when they come in to deposit a tasty morsel in a little bird’s mouth, they generally do not land but hover, drop the food in to a waiting mouth and head off to find another.

Life is never dull here at Rolling E Ranch so check back often for the next adventure, or better yet,  subscribe to my Email List and receive my latest post right to your inbox.
