Knitting and Yarn and Designing Oh My!!

Nov 16, 2016 | Knitting

Those of you that know me have probably seen me knitting at one time or another.  I can be a bit obsessed, as I think most knitters are…I knit in front of the TV, in church, in the car, (no, not when I am driving), and just about anywhere else I can think of when I have a free minute…you get the picture.
Lately, I have been bitten by the “design my own patterns” bug. I suppose the precursor to this was when I opened  My Etsy Shop (shameless plug alert!) where I sell yarns from our alpaca herd as well as yarns that I have hand dyed.

Having 24 Alpacas, we started with 8, has given me the opportunity to have their wonderful fiber spun in to yarn.  Obviously, I can only knit so much, and we had all this luscious yarn and roving that I needed to do something with…so, I started my online Etsy Store which gave me a place to market it.
Not too long after I started my shop, I got a hankerin’ to dye some of the white yarns, I took a couple of classes, watched a lot of videos on YouTube, read a few how to books and voila, I was hooked on dyeing.
I start out with an idea of the colors I want to use and how I think the final product will turn out. Sometimes what comes out of the dye pot is very close to what I had in mind, other times it is a surprise, but it is always a satisfying process.
I find that selling yarns on line can be a bit of a challenge, since knitters cannot see or feel the yarn and sometimes the subtleties of the colors don’t come through in photos. There is also a great deal of competition as many people are Indie Dyers (independent dyers) and the challenge to me is how to differentiate myself from everyone else.

Over the years, I have bought beautiful yarns not always knowing what I would make with them.  I still have some of those yarns in my stash.  But, when I have seen a yarn knit up in to a pattern, I have been more inclined to buy it and the pattern.

I hit on the idea of designing patterns using my yarns with the thought that knitters could visualize how my yarns would look knit up.  And not just that, I have found that I really enjoy the creative process.

Not really knowing where to start to learn how to design, I started looking around on the web and found an awesome website called Craftsy which has online classes on all different kinds of crafts. I started with a class on Lace Shawl Design, the output of which was my Darlin’ Clementine Shawl.

Right now I am taking a class on Pattern Writing which is helping me to word and format my patterns so that they are easily understandable.  My Martini Porch Party Scarf was written by me while I have been taking this class.  I am also taking a class on sock design, which I plan to put to good use designing with my many hand dyed sock yarns.

I hope you will all stay tuned as I will be writing more posts about my designs and as always, life here on the ranch.

Until next time,  Happy Trails,
